A Contemporary Realist painter and muralist, John is known for his vivid use of color, light and detail as well as for his extraordinary breadth of subject matter. His subjects range from sailing and boating to the Boston Classical Orchestra to the History of Duck Hunting on the Chesapeake. Born in 1944 in Frankfort, Kentucky, Gable has received awards from the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and began his career as an automobile designer at GM, working under John De Lorean, among others. He was assistant chief designer for Pontiac in the late 1970's when he decided to move to Maine to pursue a career as an artist.
Recognized as a master painter of classic automobiles, he was commissioned by The Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan to produce a 65-foot mural on the history of the automobile. Gable has established an international reputation among collectors of sporting art and is known as the Dean of Rowing Painting.
